Examples of lectures

Skeiv Verden is more than just a safe social meeting place. We are an organisation with professionally skilled and trained employees who offer expertise and knowledge dissemination in several different ways.

Lecture for child protection

Skeiv Verden has developed a lecture on queerness, multicultural themes, minority perspectives and intersectionality that is aimed directly at the tasks faced by child welfare services. Our employees have experience of working in child welfare services and therefore have a good insight into the day-to-day work of child welfare services. We believe that a mix of competence building and skills training will result in both better and more effective services when working with minority users. The course will therefore include updated research, theoretical frameworks and practical exercises, with the aim that participants will feel more confident and competent in their work.

Lectures for DPS and other mental health services

Skeiv Verden has developed a lecture on queerness, multicultural themes, minority perspectives and intersectionality that directly addresses the tasks facing mental health services. Our employees have experience of working in mental health care and therefore have good insight into everyday life in a clinic. We believe that a mix of competence building and skills training will result in both better and more effective services when working with minority users. The course will therefore include updated research, theoretical frameworks and practical exercises, with the aim that participants will feel more confident and competent in their work.

Lecture on self-monitoring for activists

Activism is demanding - we're all trying to change a system that discriminates against us, and the struggle engages us not only because we're passionate about justice, it also affects our identity. Unfortunately, it's all too common for activists to stay involved until they burn out and have to retire, and many organisations struggle with sick leave and high turnover. This is a problem both because it hurts the people who burn out, but also for the cause - we need everyone to be involved and we need experienced activists to help new activists. Change takes time. We see self-advocacy as a form of activism in itself: it's about standing firm in the system that discriminates against us. In the workshop, you will learn how to take care of yourself, for yourself, for those around you and for what you are fighting for.

Lectures for educational institutions

In order to achieve equitable services, it is important to have competent workers, and the foundation for this is laid in education. Unfortunately, queer issues, multicultural themes, minority perspectives and internationality are often not prioritised. As a result, society's services lack expertise in these topics, which affects the services they offer. It also affects the research sector, where diversity is increasingly recognised as important. By ordering a course from us, you get a competence-enhancing lecture that also engages with the topic. We want to light a candle for your students by showing that these topics are both important and exciting, and motivate students to explore the topics further in their professional lives.

Book courses customised for your workplace

Over time, Queer World has built up solid knowledge of queer issues, multicultural themes, minority perspectives and intersectionality. Through many years of work, we have been in contact with all types of public services and many organisations. We therefore have good experience of working with a wide range of sectors and adapting our knowledge transfer to many different everyday situations. By ordering courses from us, you get a competence-enhancing programme consisting of up-to-date research, many years of experience and exercises where we together practice useful skills adapted to your everyday work. Our goal is for you to feel more confident and competent in your work.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have any questions?

Check our overview of frequently asked questions, or get in touch!

Can you come to us?

Yes, we can come to you. We travel all over the country and receive funding for some travel. But sometimes we have to ask to cover travel costs.

How much do courses and lectures cost?

It's basically free for schools, adult education, some asylum centres and other organisations that work with immigrants, because we receive funding to carry out skills development measures, but for businesses, both courses and lectures cost money. For more information, see specific courses or lectures, or get in touch!

Do we need to book an interpreter for participants?

We cover several languages such as Norwegian, English and Arabic. Beyond this, you must both book and pay for your own interpreter, as we do not receive funding to offer this.

Can our volunteers or staff help with languages?

Of course, volunteers and staff can help with language comprehension, but we recommend using qualified interpreters, as the content can be complicated to translate.

To book an interpreter, see: https://www.tolkeregisteret.no/

How many participants are recommended for courses and lectures?

It varies, but we recommend between 15-25 participants to ensure interactive participation. There is of course the possibility of customisation if we receive a request for this, so please contact us if you need courses or lectures for groups of less than 15 participants.

Can you help me apply for asylum in Norway?

We are not able to support you directly, but we have collected some information and resources that might be of help:

Contact the LGBTQA+ organisation in your country. And if you don't know it, you can check the ILGA directory for more information: https://ilga.org/member-organisations

Contact the programme of the United Nations for Refugees and Asylum Seekers: https://www.unhcr.org

Asking for asylum in Norway: Please check the information in this website - for the norwegian immigration authorities - if you are planning to seek asylum here: https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/protection-asylum/protection-asylum-in-norway/?resetguide=1

Asking for asylum in Norway, after entering another EU country: Also, if your plan is to come to Norway after entering the EU Schengen Area and having your passport stamped, please keep in mind that your entry could be subject to the Dublin Convention and therefore demanded to ask for asylum in your first point of entry in the EU. You can read more about it here: https://www.udi.no/en/word-definitions/cooperation-under-the-dublin-regulation/

We hope these remarks will make your journey safer, since this is our main priority in these times: knowing that you get in contact with the right people and get the proper advice, so you do not expose yourself unnecessarily to danger or harm Thank you again for your trust and we hope you find safety soon. If you happen to arrive to Norway, please do not hesitate to contact us, it will be a pleasure to have you here in our activities.
