Queer Expertise Centre

Queer competence reception is a course programme
aimed at asylum seekers and residents in asylum centres.
What is Skeiv Kompetanse Mottak?

Free workshop for everyone
ordinary asylum centres

The goals we seek to achieve are 1) that all LGBTIQ+ residents are made aware of their rights and receive information about where they can seek support and fellowship, 2) to provide knowledge and initiate dialogue that combats prejudice and discrimination against queer people and prevents negative social control. The programme is run by people with a minority background to promote openness and good dialogue with participants.

Themes

What we talk about

Part 1: Social identities

In Queer Competence, we use knowledge and dialogue as a basis for promoting greater acceptance and respect for queer people. The programme we use is interactive and non-confrontational. In the first part of the course, we begin by talking about different social identities - including inviting reflection on the participants' own social identities - and the importance of respect for this.

Part 2: Gender and sexuality diversity

When we talk about gender and sexuality diversity, we explain what LGBTIQ+ stands for, with information about different queer identities. We spend time allowing participants to share thoughts, reflect and discuss with us. When we explain the letters, we also ask about rights in Norway, and here we address topics such as same-sex marriage, family types, dating, sex and not least consent.

Part 3: Cross-discrimination

The final part of the programme encourages a conversation about cross-discrimination. We ask participants to discuss together what kind of experiences an LGBTIQ person can have when this person is an immigrant at an asylum centre or adult education and what we can do to ensure a safe environment for everyone. Here they come up with different experiences and thoughts.

Working together

UDI's information modules

With support from IMDI, Queer World has been offering Queer Expertise to residents at ordinary asylum reception centres since 2016. We inform residents about topics such as discrimination based on different social identities, human rights and gender and sexuality diversity. The content of the programme is adapted from the UDI's information modules for adult residents at asylum reception centres.

Module 4: Identity, morality and sexual harassment

Social control, inclusive dressing, views of women, morality, rape, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, sexual harassment, violence and sexual abuse.

Module 5: Family patterns and forms of cohabitation

Forms of cohabitation, cohabitation, homosexual cohabitation, etc.

Module 8: Social conditions, norms and values

Who Skeiv Kompetanse Mottak is suitable for

Newcomers to Norway may be unfamiliar with the rules and norms for recognising and accepting queer identity and orientation in Norway, as is gradually reflected in Norwegian legislation and mainstream culture. Some also come from cultures that have an erroneous or negative view of queer identity and orientation. In queer competence, we use knowledge and dialogue as a basis for promoting greater acceptance and respect for queer people.
