Podcast about queer people with an immigrant background - Skeiv dagsorden

In connection with Mona Frank's participation at The podcast "Queer Agenda" we want to highlight some of the key perspectives she shares about how Queer World works to support queer people from minority backgrounds and their parents.

A double minority experience: Queer World as a safe community

Queer World is an organisation dedicated to queer people with a minority background. Mona explains the unique challenges that Queer World's target group faces in society at large and in their neighbourhood due to their sexual orientation and immigrant background. She also explains how Queer World works with these unique challenges by creating safe meeting places and supportive communities.

"If you meet someone with homophobic and transphobic attitudes, it's very easy to just put them in a box and look down on them. But this is dangerous in order to change attitudes, so it's important to meet people with respect and demand that respect.

Mona FranksCounsellor and project manager, family network

The family network: a space for open dialogue and understanding

One of Queer World's important projects is the family network, an initiative aimed at immigrant parents with LGBTIQ+ children. Through workshops and counselling, parents are offered a safe space where they can gain insight, ask questions and process difficult emotions. Here, Skeiv Verden can build bridges and provide support to families who need counselling to strengthen relationships and acceptance.

Pride and community through meeting places and activities

Mona shares how Skeiv Verden works to promote minority pride through various social arenas, such as the Skeiv café and film evenings. These meeting places, as well as participation in Pride events, provide space for both unity and celebration of identity. These are not only important social gatherings, but also arenas where queer people with minority backgrounds can share experiences and build a community that lifts them up.

Reflection and learning for professionals working with the target group

For professionals working with this target group, whether in education, health or other sectors, Mona emphasises the importance of reflecting on their own attitudes and prejudices. "By meeting people with respect and curiosity, you can contribute to a more inclusive environment that recognises complex identities.

An open invitation to dialogue and collaboration

Finally, we encourage anyone who wants to learn more about queer people with minority backgrounds to get in touch with us. We are always open to dialogue and collaboration to expand our efforts and reach out to even more people.

We invite you to listen to the full episode of "Queer Agenda" for a deeper understanding of the topics Mona discusses and how Queer World is working to create an inclusive future for all queer people with minority backgrounds. Joining her on the podcast are Thea Litschi and Misan Selmer, both of whom have exciting and positive messages of their own.
