Skeiv Verden works actively with Norwegian language training and collaborates with several skilled organisations that are committed to facilitating safe and good learning arenas for queer minorities. We want to publicise what we do, how we work, what we work for and who we work with.
For almost five years, Skeiv Verden Vest has run an inclusive queer language café in Bergen. Our goal is to offer a complementary programme where everyone, regardless of gender, orientation, religious background or life situation, can feel safe. In addition to language training, we emphasise creating a culture where we teach each other to use gender-neutral and inclusive words and concepts, and emphasise the importance of pronouns.
Inclusive language learning: In the language café, we work actively to raise awareness among participants and volunteers about language use. We encourage asking questions that respect the individual's history and identity. For example:
By being aware of such nuances in language use, we build a community that recognises and respects everyone's identity and life experience.
Olesen Teaching offers free Norwegian courses, funded by IMDI, in collaboration with queer organisations. Members of queer organisations now have the opportunity to participate in a digital B1 course on Wednesdays 16.30- 20, starting 26/3. Let us know if you are in the target group!
From 2025 onwards, Queer World West will enter into a partnership with Olesen Teaching, a company that offers free Norwegian courses funded by IMDi in collaboration with queer organisations. This means that members of queer organisations will now have the opportunity to participate in a digital B1 course every Wednesday from 16:30 to 20:00, starting on 26 March. This is an important step in ensuring that queer minorities have access to Norwegian language training in a safe environment.
Olesen Teaching shares our commitment to inclusive language practices and learning environments. Our partnership means that we work together to implement an inclusive teaching methodology that takes into account participants' backgrounds and identities.
Are you in the target group? Sign up for the digital B1 course and become part of a safe learning environment!
Hi! My name is Siri and I'm passionate about creating safe classrooms for queer immigrants!
Queer World is already working with Siri language school, which works with the project "Safe classrooms, safe lives" to create safe and predictable learning environments for queer minorities.
New this year, Siri Language School will be moving into Pridehuset from 23 April. Siri Helena Rød Skarby has taught Norwegian as a second language at private language schools, the non-profit sector and at university. This year, IMDi has subsidised 100 free places at Siri's language school. The focus here is on providing participants with language skills that strengthen their opportunities in society, while the teaching is adapted to the needs and challenges of queer people.
Siri Language School works closely with Skeiv Verden to ensure that the language programme takes the participants' identity into account and that the teaching reflects important values such as openness, respect and safety. This collaboration is part of Skeiv Verden's overall efforts to strengthen Norwegian language training for queer minorities and help ensure that everyone has access to good learning arenas.

At Queer World West, we will continue to develop and strengthen our language offering in collaboration with various organisations that share our commitment to inclusive learning arenas. Through collaborations like this, we help to create opportunities for everyone, regardless of background, and build a more inclusive society.
